Position Description – Sunday/Special Event Custodian

Position Statement

Duties of the Position

Sunday Mornings


Entry Doors

• Unlock Cambridge Street, Thorne Street, Market door, and front door on Ainslie Street


• Turn on lights in the sanctuary, Ainslie Hall, and lower hallway


• Uncover the piano in the sanctuary and put cover in closet by balcony stairs

Sound System

• Turn off doorbells (switches located in the office)

• Unlock storage cupboard and set up pulpit microphone and place handheld microphone on communion table

• Turn on sound system at rear of sanctuary and check that microphones are functional (new batteries are in the cupboard)

Collection Plates

• Set out six brass collection plate on the table at the back of the sanctuary

• Set one wooden plate at the end of the first row of the choir

• Set the beaded plate on the communion table for the children’s offering


• Place bulletins at the Cambridge Street and Market entrances and on the table at the back of the sanctuary

Ceiling Fans in the Sanctuary

• Adjust both switches to low before the start of the service


• Check thermostat in the sanctuary and adjust if necessary


• Check all washrooms and replenish supplies as necessary • Empty garbage if necessary

Visual Check

• Clean or vacuum any area as necessary

• Pick up any garbage around the building

• Shovel snow, and salt walkways, as necessary

• Clean glass on entry doors if necessary


• Ensure Christ candle is on communion table with the candle lighter, and that the candle lighter is working

• Place glass of water beside pulpit for minister

• Check with minister or music director regarding special services (communion etc.)

During Service

Entry Doors

• Once the service starts, lock the Cambridge Street, Thorne Street and front Ainslie Street entrances

• Monitor the Market entrance during the service


Entry Doors

• Lock the Market entrance and ensure that all other doors are locked


• Turn off lights in the sanctuary and ensure all lights are off before you leave


• Cover the piano in the sanctuary

Sound System

• Turn off the sound system

• Turn off the microphones and place in the storage cupboard


• Open the church office for the collection counters


• Collect the used bulletins from the sanctuary and leave them in the church office

Ceiling Fans in the Sanctuary

• Reset the ceiling fans to ‘high’


• Lower the thermostat in the sanctuary if necessary

Visual Check

• Blow out the Christ candle and return to storage cupboard

• Remove any flowers from the sanctuary to the parlour kitchen

• Notify the Property Committee of any problems or needs

Special Events Before Event

• Arrive at least one-half hour before the event

• Unlock appropriate entrance and turn on lights in rooms being used

• Check washrooms and re-stock as necessary

• Clean or vacuum as necessary

• Pick up any garbage around the building

• Shovel snow and salt walkways, as necessary

• Put out tables and chairs if needed

During Event

• Be available to assist, or answer questions

• Monitor the entrance being used

After Event

• Put away tables and chairs, if used

• Take out garbage

• Sweep or vacuum floor if necessary

• Check building that everyone is gone

• Turn out all lights

• Lock doors

Other duties as required.


This position reports jointly to the Ministry and Personnel Committee and the Property Committee.

Hours of Work

Sunday mornings – 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (approximate) Special events – evenings and weekends as necessary

$13.00/hour Established custodial fees for special events dependent on duration and complexity
