I hope that everyone had an opportunity to get out and enjoy the weather on the long weekend.  Jim and I were fortunate to spend several days at our cottage switching from winter to summer mode.  And although the black flies were beginning to get friendly, the rock and the water are incredibly restorative to the spirit.  There is something magical about hearing the call of the loon across the lake.

This is the last Sunday for our collection for the YWCA Girls’ Programs.  These programs would love donations of:

-          Canvas

-          Acrylic paint

-          Paint brushes

-          Paper plates

-          Plastic utensils

-          Embellishments (glitter, rhinestones, etc.)

-          Sharpies

-          Journals

-          Scrapbook paper

-          White glue

-          Glue sticks

-          Glue gun sticks

-          Construction paper

-          New mason jars

All of these items can be found at Dollarama.

For the months of June, July and August, we have taken up a challenge put out to the community by Central Presbyterian Church.  For the past few summers, they have collected large quantities of one item that is on the list of most needed items of the Cambridge Self Help Food Bank.  This summer, they have chosen to collect pasta sauce.  I think that we should try to match them by collecting pasta and spaghetti to go with their sauce.  I have been in touch with the Chair of their Missions Committee and she is overjoyed that we have responded.  Next week the shopping cart will be near the Cambridge Street entrance to make it easier to drop off donations.  I will keep track of numbers of packages and will keep you posted.  Tell your friends.  For about $1, they can help make a difference to a family in need.

One of our regular meat pie makers from Saginaw House has finally found an affordable apartment and will be moving into it in a couple of weeks.  Mehran has lived at Saginaw for three years, and has been trying to find accommodation for the last year and half.  He is ready to be on his own again, and has insisted that he still wants to come and help in the kitchen.  Mehran still needs a few things to set up house.  These can be gently used items and pick up is available.  If you can help with any of the following, please let me know.  Mehran will be very grateful.

  • Twin Sized Mattress and Box Spring
  • TV
  • Pots & Pans/Frying pan
  • Medium Sized Refrigerator
  • Dresser
  • Area Rug
  • Twin Sized Sheets and Blankets
  • Pillow

With the coming of this warm, summer weather, the market becomes increasingly busier each Saturday morning.  If you have an hour or two to spare, consider coming down to help our Apple Corps.  They would welcome extra hands to make dumplings or sell pies outside our market door.  Or, if selling is not your forte, join Michelle Hogan in the sanctuary to welcome visitors and show off our historic church sanctuary and awesome pipe organ.  This is a great way to be an ambassador for our church.
